Ingredients:
- 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 cup (100g) sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 3/4 cup (180ml) whole milk
- 1 large egg (optional for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon milk (optional for egg wash)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
- Add the cold cubed butter, and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the grated cheddar cheese.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the milk.
- Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead a few times.
- Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick.
- Use a round cutter to cut out scones and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Optional: Whisk the egg and milk to create an egg wash and brush over the top of each scone for a golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
