Instructions:

  1. Gather all ingredients and equipment.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, vigorously whisk the eggs and sugar until the mixture is pale and slightly thickened.
  3. Gradually pour in the milk and heavy cream, whisking continuously until well combined.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
  5. If desired, blend in the rum or bourbon for a spirited version.
  6. Transfer the eggnog to a pitcher or bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld.
