Ingredients:

  • 8-10 large fresh mint leaves
  • 15 ml rich simple syrup (2:1 sugar to water ratio)
  • 60 ml high-proof Kentucky bourbon (90–100 proof)
  • 2 cups crushed ice
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 3 large mint sprigs
  • 1 pinch powdered sugar

Instructions:

  1. Place 8–10 fresh mint leaves and 15 ml of rich simple syrup into the bottom of a silver julep cup or high-quality stainless steel tin.
  2. Use a flat-based muddler to gently press the leaves 4–5 times against the syrup to express menthol oils without tearing the leaves or releasing bitter chlorophyll.
  3. Fill the cup halfway with crushed ice or pebble ice.
  4. Pour 60 ml of high-proof Kentucky bourbon and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters over the ice.
  5. Using a long-handled bar spoon, stir vigorously until the exterior of the metal cup develops a thick, white frost.
  6. Top the cup with additional crushed ice to create a 'snow-capped' dome. Garnish with 3 large mint sprigs and an optional dusting of powdered sugar.
