Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (14 oz each) whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the canned whole tomatoes to the saucepan. Crush them lightly with your hands. Stir in the sugar, oregano, and basil.
  4. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cook uncovered for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Blend if a smoother sauce is desired.
  6. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
