Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cans (14 oz each) whole peeled tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Add the canned whole tomatoes to the saucepan. Crush them lightly with your hands. Stir in the sugar, oregano, and basil.
- Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cook uncovered for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Blend if a smoother sauce is desired.
- Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
