Ingredients:

  • 2 fl oz Blended Scotch Whisky (or soft Single Malt)
  • 75 fl oz Drambuie (heather-honey liqueur)
  • Ice (large, dense cubes preferred, as needed)
  • 1 wide strip Lemon Peel (for garnish, avoiding pith)

Instructions:

  1. Chill the Glass: Place the rocks glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while preparing the cocktail. This ensures the final drink remains cold.
  2. Prepare the Garnish: Use a sharp vegetable peeler or paring knife to carve a wide strip of lemon peel (avoiding the bitter white pith). Set aside.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Add the specified amounts of Scotch whisky and Drambuie directly into the mixing glass.
  4. Add Ice: Fill the mixing glass at least three-quarters full with fresh, dense ice cubes.
  5. Stir for Chill and Dilution: Insert the bar spoon and stir firmly but gently for approximately 30–45 seconds. The mixing glass should become thoroughly frosted on the outside. This controlled stirring achieves the necessary silky texture for the Rusty Nail.
  6. Strain and Serve: Discard the chilling ice from the rocks glass (if used). Place 2–3 fresh, large, dense ice cubes into the chilled rocks glass. Strain the mixture directly into the glass.
  7. Express the Oils: Take the strip of lemon peel and twist it over the surface of the drink to express the essential oils.
  8. Garnish: Run the twisted lemon peel around the rim of the glass before dropping it into the drink or perching it on the edge.
