Ingredients:

  • 1 pound (450g) fresh asparagus
  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5ml) kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) unsalted butter or extra virgin olive oil (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Wash the asparagus thoroughly. Snap off the tough ends. Consider peeling the lower portion of thicker spears.
  2. Pour the water into a saucepan. Insert a steamer basket. The water should be below the basket.
  3. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Place the asparagus in the steamer basket. Cover the saucepan tightly.
  4. Steam for 3-7 minutes, depending on thickness. Check for doneness after 3 minutes. It should be tender-crisp.
  5. Remove the asparagus from the steamer basket and transfer it to a plate.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, and butter or olive oil (if using). Serve immediately.
