Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons (30g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons (15g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (10g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 tablespoons (45ml) milk (any kind works)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) vegetable oil (or melted unsalted butter)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons (20g) chocolate chips (milk, dark, or semi-sweet) - optional

Instructions:

  1. In the mug, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined and no lumps remain.
  2. Add the milk, oil (or melted butter), and vanilla extract to the mug.
  3. Use the fork or whisk to mix the wet and dry ingredients together until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  4. Gently fold in the chocolate chips, if using.
  5. Microwave on high power for 60-70 seconds. Cooking time will vary slightly depending on your microwave. Watch carefully to avoid overcooking.
  6. The cake is done when it is puffed up and slightly firm to the touch. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs attached (not wet batter).
  7. Let the cake cool for a minute or two before serving. It will be very hot!
